    the long bet · europa

when does a probe look for life inside Europa’s ocean? our call: 2055

in one line Clipper maps Europa from above from 2031. no lander or ice-melting probe is funded. our call: the first probe reaches the ocean in 2055, after a launch in about 2047. low confidence.

    what is set

    what is not set

    our call, step by step

    1. about 2032. the next decadal survey uses Clipper’s first results and can pick a Europa lander with a cryobot.
    2. about 2036. the mission starts, after the flagships already in line.
    3. about 2047. launch. Clipper took about 9 years from its 2015 start to launch, and a nuclear-heated probe is harder.
    4. about 2053. landing, after about a 6-year trip (Clipper’s takes about 5½).
    5. 2055. the probe reaches the ocean. 15 to 25 km of ice takes about 1 to 3 years: slow in the cold top layer, faster in the warmer ice below (BAA calc from the JPL rates).

what moves it: earlier if Clipper finds thin ice or water pockets near the surface, or if a cheaper heavy launch makes a big lander affordable. later if the ice is thicker than 25 km or the next decadal picks another world first.
